Homeowners
1- Are my possessions covered "off premises"?
Don't take a chance with expensive equipment. Make sure your insurance covers possessions in transit and for "mysterious disappearance". (Lack of coverage can be an extremely costly mistake). Most homeowners policies cover your possessions, up to a certain limit, while off premises but not for mysterious disappearance, unless you specifically schedule them.
2- Should I buy "umbrella" or "excess" liability coverage?
Don't take basic liability coverage for granted...especially if you have "attractive hazards" such as a swimming pool, trampoline, or "frisky" pets (and don't forget the automobile exposure). An umbrella policy is fairly inexpensive and provides a valuable layer of liability protection above your homeowners and auto liability limits.
Auto
1- Do I need to buy the "collision damage waiver" coverage when I rent a vehicle on vacation?
As long as you have physical damage coverage on your personal auto policy, most policies provide the same physical damage coverage for rental vehicles as they would for your own autos (i.e. if you have comprehensive and collision coverage on your own auto with a $500 deductible, the same deductibles would apply on your rental vehicles). However, be careful - most rental companies will make you pay for the damage to the rental car on your credit card immediately after an accident and make you wait for reimbursement from your own insurance carrier. Also, check with your credit card company to see if they provide any coverage if you rent the vehicle using the credit card.

2- What limit of liability should I choose?
Choose the appropriate limits - don't underestimate jury awards often they are astronomical. Consider liability coverage carefully and don't forget umbrella liability policies.
Business
1- Do I need to buy Workers Compensation insurance, even if I only have 1 or 2 employees?
Yes, by law you are required to carry workers comp, coverage whether you have 1 employee or 100. If you compensate an employee in anyway (even if it's not monetary), you could be held responsible for their medical bills and lost wages if they are injured or become sick while working for you. You can choose to exclude yourself from coverage as an owner of the business, but don't take a chance with the law.
2- Are my tools used in my business automatically covered under my "contents" coverage?
Yes and No. Tools (and miscellaneous equipment) are generally covered while at the premises listed on the policy up to the contents limit but not for things such as mysterious disappearance. In order to protect these items (which can be expensive), you should schedule the larger items and purchase "contractors equipment" coverage. Not only will they be covered for mysterious disappearance, but they will also be covered at job sites and in a vehicle as well as at your own location - virtually everywhere. **Remember - small tools and equipment tend to "walk off" but can be very expensive to replace**
Financial Coverages
1- Do I need to buy disability or health insurance if I have workers compensation insurance?
Yes- workers compensation coverage only applies to sickness and injury that occurs in the course of employment. Most disability and health insurance plans will cover you for accidents or illnesses that occur either on or off the job - check your disability policy for specific clauses relating to occupational injuries.
2- Why should I buy life insurance if I'm only 20 or 30 years old?
Now is the time to buy - when you're young and healthy! Life insurance premiums are based on the age you are when you purchase the coverage so it's cheaper to buy a policy when you're 20 than when you're 40! Also, if you purchase life insurance and then become uninsurable due to an illness, most policies cannot be cancelled or non-renewed by the insurance company as long as you pay the premiums.
